Introduction

A lightning strike poses a significant risk to a GPS timing antenna installation. It can damage both the GPS antenna and connected equipment. Adding lightning protection to your antenna installation is essential for reliable system operation.

Understanding the Risks

GPS antennas are typically mounted on the roof of a building with a clear view of the sky. This makes them particularly vulnerable to lightning strikes. Without adequate protection, a lightning strike can damage both the antenna and connected indoor equipment.

Key Protection Components

A lightning protection system includes two critical elements:

Proper Grounding

The grounding arrangement is the foundation of any lightning protection system. This should include a low-impedance path to earth, typically using thick copper wire and ground rods. The grounding connections must be installed to meet local electrical standards.

A Surge Protection Device (SPD)

The second component is the surge protection device (or lightning arrestor). This should be installed inline on the antenna cable. This device redirects surge currents to ground while allowing normal GPS signals to pass through unimpeded. The surge protection device should be installed at the point where the antenna cable enters the building.

  • Mount the surge protection device as close as possible to the point where the antenna cable enters the building
  • Ensure all metal components are properly connected to the grounding system
  • Keep all grounding conductors as straight and direct as possible

  • Testing ground resistance values
  • Inspecting all connections for corrosion
  • Verifying surge protection device functionality
